Abstract
This is the first course assignment associated Shannon Tushingham and William Lipe’s Pioneers Project. The assignment was a requirement of Tushingham’s 2021 graduate seminar in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) ANTH 535. As a public archaeology and science communication project, students were directed to research, write, and publish a Wikipedia biography about “Pioneers” in CRM archaeology. “Pioneers” are those people who have who have made substantial leadership contributions to CRM archaeology, but for various reasons remain largely unknown and their contributions underappreciated. This is an ongoing pedagogical experiment in engaged research methods that focuses on scientific dissemination in Wikipedia, which, love it or hate it, it is one of the most heavily used sources of information on the internet. Note: that this assignment was improved in later iterations, but this initial experiment is included for the historical record. Later versions of the assignment, for example, required students to complete Wikipedia training and publish their work on Wikipedia. For example, we do *not* recommend what we initially thought was a good idea: “this semester you are not required to post your biographies on Wikipedia” (as stated in this flyer). Tushingham and Lipe are currently working on a paper that discusses the development of the project and how to avoid some of these common problems.
