Abstract
Stalking the Wild Calliope is an original musical composition written for a standard wind symphony orchestra. It is approximately seven minutes and forty-five seconds in length and is scored for piccolo, two flutes, two oboes, three B-flat clarinets, B-flat bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, two bassoons, three B-flat trumpets, four horns, three tenor trombones, bass trombone, euphonium, tuba, timpani, xylophone and a variety of additional percussion instruments. The piece uses musical figures commonly associated with the suspense of a hunter stalking its prey, except that the prey in this case is a keyboard organ whose sound is produced through a steam whistle. The calliope is named after Calliope, the chief Greek mythology muse, who presides over epic poetry.
