Wayfinding and Gapminding: An Integrated Approach to Developing a Library Internship LearningExperience. In: Learning in Action: Designing Successful Graduate Student Work Experiences in Academic Libraries

Since the fall of 2017, Loyola University Chicago has offered MLIS graduate

students part-time, temporary internships. Each internship provides instruction

and reference experience, plus special projects aligned with the individual

intern’s professional goals and interests. This structure offers space for what

we think of as wayfinding, the process of seeking information and experiences

to decide among possible future paths, and gapminding, or filling experience

gaps to smooth pursuit of those paths. This profile details our process over

the 2019–2020 academic year to cocreate an internship experience to propel

Emily to a career in librarianship that reflects her aspirations.
