This study compared the effect of conventional retorting and microwave sterilization (MW) on the gas barrier and morphological properties of two multilayer polymeric films; •Significant increase (p<0.05) in oxygen barrier properties was observed for the films after the thermal treatments; •X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry studies and electron microscopy images helped study the morphological changes after the thermal treatments. The two structures were found suitable for MW application.
