As reported in the SPEC Kit 313 "E-book Collections" from October 2009 survey of ARL libraries, enthusiasm for ebooks is tempered by frustrations with publisher policies, staff resistance to a changing model, and confusion over multiple interfaces and platform access.â An analysis of the use and purchase history of ebooks at Washington State University was conducted to provide direction on how to proceed with ebook collection development and acquisition considering the multitude of new options. Guidelines developed on where to purchase ebooks, choice of ebook platform, selection of individual titles versus collections, simultaneous user options and perpetual access will be presented. Three ebook aggregators (NetLibrary, EBL and ebrary) will be reviewed and compared for content, licensing rights, functionality and purchasing models. The ebook landscape is complicated. This presentation will provide information that will assist decision makers on what the choices are and what criteria could be applied to decide the next step for their organization.
