Abstract
WSU and EWU embarked on an authority control project in 2000. The project involved three major phases. First, the existing database in Griffin was sent to OCLC for processing. Second, new records are sent to OCLC on a bimonthly basis for authority "washing." Third, librarians go through OCLC authority reports and use III Automated Authority Control and Global Update to solve any problems left out by OCLC authority control process. The presentation will focus on how we use III automated authority control module and III global update function to accomplish what can not be done by OCLC automatic authority wash. 1. A brief definition of authority control 2. Introduction to our authority control project 3. Tips on how to use III automated authority control module 4. Tips on how to use III global update function 5. Authority control procedures we follow here 6. What issues should be watched out for in the authority control process. Presented at the 2002 Northwest Innovative User Group Conference, Portland, OR, Oct. 14-15, 2002. Special thanks to Mike Nelson, the Bibliographic Control Librarian who takes charge of the authority control project on the side of Eastern Washington University, for his invaluable insight and extensive trouble-shooting work in the early stages of this project, without which it would not have gotten off the ground.
