Abstract
Privacy for researchers and other users has long been a major emphasis for archives, libraries, and museums. Long before September 11, 2001, the American Library Association issued its “Freedom to Read” and “Intellectual Freedom” statements. The implications of anti-terrorism measures, including the USA Patriot Act, the Attorney General’s Guidelines expanding the investigative powers of the FBI, and the Homeland Security Act have been of concern to the various providers of information to the public. We will discuss various means by which institutions strive to protect their users’ free access to information while abiding by the demands of national security.
