Abstract
The problem of aircraft noise has a long and well publicized history. People living in close vicinity to airports face constant noise from aircraft operations which affects their quality of life, and in some cases, their health. With advances in technology, modern aircraft have better performance capabilities and have more potential for noise mitigation. One aspect of this mitigation is though the source of the noise itself which is primarily the airframe and engine. In this paper, the authors investigate the other means of noise mitigation, through improvements in aircraft departure procedures. Alternate procedures are modeled and compared against the Noise Abatement Departure Procedure 2 which is one of the current standards recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The effects of adopting alternate procedures for operations at the Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International airport are studied here. The Aviation Environmental Design Tool is used for modeling which is part of the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) environmental design suite tool. Multiple noise metrics as well as fuel burn are compared for different scenarios, thus enabling a quantitative assessment of the proposed procedures. Results contained herein show promise for specific applications and motivate further exploration of alternate departure procedures.
