Delayed Deceleration Approach Procedure Noise Modeling Validation using Noise Measurements and Radar Data

Abstract
A validation methodology and evaluation of delayed deceleration approach procedure performance and noise impact modeling using noise measurements and flight radar data are presented. Advanced flight operational procedures such as delayed deceleration approaches, where aircraft maintain higher speeds and therefore remain cleanly configured and at lower thrust levels for a longer period of the procedure, can be utilized for noise abatement around airports. Delayed deceleration approaches have been shown in modeling to offer noise reductions before the stabilization point compared to procedures that decelerate early. This methodology to validate the performance and noise results of delayed deceleration approach modeling includes the monitoring of operational flights from Boeing 737, Airbus A320, and Embraer E190 radar data and comparing the modeled sound exposure levels of these procedures with available data from ground noise monitors at two major airports. Thrust from the radar flights was modeled based on weight predicted from final approach speed and assumed flap and slat settings. When corrected for atmospheric conditions, modeled noise results are shown to be consistent with noise monitor readings under reasonable flap deployment schedule assumptions during various early, intermediate, and delayed deceleration approach procedures. In addition, measured noise results indicate that compared to early deceleration approaches, aircraft performing delayed deceleration approaches reduced noise by an average of 3-6 dB across different aircraft types.
