Lean Blowout Dependence on Fuel Properties and Combustion Conditions in the ARC-M1 Single-Cup Swirl Combustor

Abstract
As alternatively derived jet fuels become more common in the aviation industry, it is increasingly important to understand their lean blowout behavior as early as possible in the fuel development process. This work uses a small-scale research combustor (ARC-M1) to ascertain the lean blowoff behavior of a selection of conventional and research fuels specifically chosen for their unique properties. Two of the fuels have their lean blowoff behavior measured over a range of relevant combustor operating conditions. Additionally, particle image velocimetry (PIV) is collected on the combustor at identical operating conditions to evaluate the effects of combustor velocity profiles on lean blowout behavior. These velocity fields provide insight into how combustor operating parameters can change flow inside a combustor, affecting the blowoff process. The lean blowoff behavior in the ARC-M1 is found to be strongly dependent on properties that govern the fuel atomization and vaporization processes, including viscosity and distillation curve temperatures. This work provides insight into how various fuel properties and combustor operating parameters impact lean blowoff performance in the relatively small combustor geometry of the ARC-M1.
