Abstract
This paper discusses the concept of reducing aircraft noise on departure through changes to climb profiles. The idea of a procedure level-off is introduced, which consists of restricting the climb of aircraft in a departure procedure so that aircraft maintain level flight in specific sections of the procedure. Due to the lower thrust demand of level flight compared to climbing flight, aircraft engine noise is substantially lower during level segments. It is found that by restricting the climb of aircraft within 10 NM of the departure airport, under-track noise (LA,MAX) can be reduced by 2-4 dB for both a narrowbody and a widebody aircraft in the area where the level-off is conducted. There is an associated increase in under-track noise of 1.5-4 dB for a narrowbody aircraft and 1.5-6 dB for a widebody aircraft in the area where the climb is resumed. A fuel burn penalty of 37 lbs is estimated for a narrowbody jet aircraft conducting a 3 NM level-off and 142 lbs for a widebody jet aircraft conducting a 4 NM level-off as part of this procedure.
