Abstract

Bees in eastern Washington and western Idaho are affected by the flowers and ectosymbionts they come in contact with. Ectosymbionts may use these flowers to transmit between bee hosts, acting parasitically or beneficially. This study assessed the community composition of bees, the flowers they visited, and the mites they were carrying, within canola fields and wildflower prairies in the Palouse region of the Pacific Northwest between 2020-2022. A total of 2509 bees across 45 taxa, and 2360 ectosymbionts across 9 taxa were collected and identified. Pollen analyses in 2020 and 2021 identified 22 plant families visited by bees. Apis mellifera, Andrena (Andrenidae) and Bombus (Apidae) were the three most common bee taxa found in our study, while Kuzinia (Acarina: Acaridae) was the most common mite.
