Abstract
Prebriefing establishes expectations and provides psychological safety for participants before simulation. There currently exists a lack of clarity and consistency regarding best practices in simulation prebriefing, and this translates to variations in prebriefing practices across prelicensure nursing programs. The overall objective of this PhD by manuscript was to explore the prebriefing practices of pre-licensure nursing programs in the United States and inform nursing education practice. The first manuscript was a principle-based concept analysis that explored prebriefing in the literature. A survey was then developed and the quantitative and qualitative findings of the survey were discussed in the final two manuscripts.
Manuscript one recommended continued research and development regarding prebriefing in simulation to establish maturity as a concept. Manuscript two uncovered three major findings: infrequent use of prebriefing scripts leading to a lack of consistency in prebriefing content; new educators starting their teaching careers using simulation; and faculty not including the new concept physical safety in prebriefing. In paper three, faculty referred to prebriefing and preparation activities as similar activities that serve to manage student anxiety. Paper three also revealed that many faculty feel rushed when prebriefing students, and struggle to prepare students without giving too away much information about the scenario.
These three manuscripts contribute to the body of prebriefing research and suggest that continued prebriefing research focus on the needs and perspectives of faculty and the impact of prebriefing on students. In addition, there is a need to develop a standardized, evidenced based approach to prebriefing.
