Abstract
College Health Promotion College Student Mental Health College Student Success College Student Well-Being Health Promoting Campus
I used constructivist grounded theory to (a) explore campus characteristics that affect student mental well-being and (b) propose an integrated approach for college student mental well-being and academic success. Approaches to mental health promotion and student success are similar, sharing a foundation in a socio-ecological approach; an evolving focus on campus influences; complexity of concepts; calls for a systemic approach to creating campus culture; and a dual need for organizational effectiveness coupled with intentional selection of interventions. Through semi-structured interviews and synthesis of the literature, I describe a rationale for, and propose core components of, a macro framework approach to integrating mental health promotion and student success in higher education settings.
