This doctoral dissertation focuses on three steps in the processing of rare earth elements, evaluating a non-traditional methodology at each step. The leaching of rare earths from monazite, a common mineral source of rare earth elements, by several organic acids and mixtures of these acids has been evaluated, including one acid not previously evaluated for monazite leaching. The conversion of mixed chloride salts (including several rare earth trichlorides) to oxalate salts in a solid-state reaction has been evaluated using a variety of methodologies including thermogravimetric studies and a silver nitrate titration technique. Lastly, a separation of milligram quantities of adjacent rare earth elements are separated by electrophoresis. In addition to these experimental results, a brief review of the historical development of each of these processing steps is given at the beginning of each chapter, to provide context for how and why certain methods are in current use in the rare earth processing industry.
