Abstract
The objective of this dissertation was to develop new strategies in biofilm control. The first part of this dissertation covers the biofilm formation and biofilm-surface related problems in industrial systems. The second part of this dissertation covers the development of a new electrochemical flow cell to study bacteria surface interactions electrochemically. By using this flow cell system cell respiration can be determined. The third part of this dissertation focuses on the electrochemical biofilm control allowing dissection of the interactions between biofilms and stainless steel surfaces. Electrochemical method shows that the biofilm formation on these surfaces can be prevented. The fourth part of this dissertation is about biofilm cell density and effectiveness of the antimicrobial treatments in biofilm control. Finally the last part focuses on the future work for the cell respiration and antimicrobial control. Concluding remarks are also added to summarize the goal and focus of this dissertation.
