Abstract
This dissertation consists of three independent studies focus on consumer preferences and decision making in the areas of public health. The first chapter links consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP) for bio-based batteries and consumer characteristics and preferences for certain product attributes and environmentally friendly practices using the dichotomous-choice contingent valuation method using nationwide survey data in the U.S. The second chapter adopts the Generalized Random Forest approach, a machine learning technique, to explore the heterogeneous effects of door-to-door immunization campaigns on parents' decisions to vaccinate their children in Western Kenya. The third paper examines the links between propensity for risky behavior and determinants including cognitive capacity that influence decision making using the discrete choice experiments in Kenya.
