Abstract
This dissertation comprises three studies on environmental economics, agricultural economics, and industrial organization. More specifically, these studies relate to how firm characteristics interact with firm performance from environmental, economic, and social perspectives. The first study investigates the association between export orientation and carbon dioxide (CO2) productivity in the Indonesian agri-industry, finding a positive link that varies by industry, ownership, size, and location. The second study evaluates the impact of the Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) regulation on the economic and social performance of crude palm oil (CPO) firms. The results reveal that the regulation reduces sales but does not affect value-added, with positive effects seen
in government-owned and Java-based firms. The third study explores how different types of firms (private and public) respond to different R&D policies (subsidy schemes) and which R&D policy is the most welfare-enhancing, given more complex parameters (spillovers and privatization degrees). The results show that, for most privatization degrees, a mixed subsidy is most beneficial when spillovers are minimal, while R&D subsidies become more effective as spillovers increase.
