Abstract
This dissertation includes three essays that examine international migration in the former Soviet Union. Chapter 2 uses an endogenous growth model to explore the impact of remittances on growth in FSU countries. In this chapter, we model how output per capita, investment and consumption patterns is affected by external private financial inflows. Chapter 3 examines determinants of migratory flows from FSU republics to Russia. The size and composition of migratory flows to Russia are unique in the sense that the vast majority of migrants come from the region. We apply a gravity model to investigate factors that affect people's decision to migrate. The empirical findings of these chapters are based upon using relevant macro -level data from the World Bank Online Indicators, EBRD Transition Reports and some indicators from the Russian Federal Statistics Agency. In the last chapter, we look at factors that affect labor migration from Tajikistan to Russia. The World Bank regularly organizes household surveys in some developing and emerging countries and data on international migration have been the primary source for the last part of the thesis.
