Effects of Hypnosis on Regression to Primary Process Thinking

Abstract
The present study assessed primary thought processing in 30 participants who were evaluated for hypnotizability and given a tailored hypnotic arm-levitation induction. Afterwards, they were given a hypnotic suggestion to age regress to 5-years-old and have a dream. Two independent raters assessed the extent of primary thought processing through the participants’ dream reports. An independent-samples t-test with two levels of hypnotizability (middle and high) showed a significant difference between levels of hypnotizability and ratings of primary thought processing. In addition, a one-sample t-test showed significant differences between the middle hypnotizable and low hypnotizable groups on levels of primary process thinking. Similarly, a one-sample t-test showed a significant difference between the high hypnotizable group and low hypnotizable group on levels of primary processing. This study provides an important contribution to the understanding of the psychological processes that takes place during hypnotic age regression.
