Abstract
Memoirs and testimonios helped shape this dissertation, as individuals and I were able to speak about our experiences in our own words. This is vital for the way in which it helps to establish an archive that has excluded marginalized communities for so long. Memoirs and testimonios have provided a way for individuals to share their experiences dealing with racial battle fatigue, gender trauma, microaggressions, colorism, and overt linguistic racism and xenophobia.
By utilizing Dr. William Smith’s racial battle fatigue, I am able to provide a background that will help readers understand the case study of star tennis player Serena Williams. Additionally, Dr. Alex Iantaffi helps us get at the root of the other key concept for this project: gender trauma. Alongside this latter author, I include memoirs from Jackson Bird and Alok Vaid-Menon. Finally, in navigating the topics of microaggressions, colorism, and overt linguistic racism and xenophobia, I include memoirs and testimonios from individuals who share relevant experiences that they have encountered.
Lastly, on the uniqueness of this project—including its methodology—, this dissertation is not simply theoretical but uses a combination of theory, memoirs, and testimonios to bring to life the experiences of folks with whom I am sharing space within this work. By doing this, I wanted to create a dissertation that was accessible to the communities I was thinking of but also writing in a way that I would be able to translate into Spanish for my mother. The contribution that I have brought not only adds to the existing scholarship currently out there but also foregrounds the experiences and voices of actual people.
