Abstract
The emergence of cloud computing (CC) represents a fundamental change in the way information technology (IT) services are designed and delivered. Gartner, Inc. a technology research company, predicts that IT spending will steadily shift from traditional IT to CC from 2016 through 2020, making CC one of the most disruptive forces in IT spending since the early days of the digital age. In spite of the growth in investing in CC, our understanding of the role of IT governance in the process of deriving business value from CC investment is limited. Therefore, this dissertation determines the relationship between IT governance and value derived from CC investment by first conceptualizing the IT governance and its role in creating business value from IT investment. Then, a research model is developed and a survey is designed and validated to investigate the relationship between IT governance mechanism and CC business value. The research model is examined using data collected from 250 US organizations that have invested in CC for more than one year. The result of this dissertation contributes in three areas. First, it shows that IT governance mechanisms (structural, procedural, and relational mechanisms) are important antecedents of the business value that a firm can achieve from investing in CC. Second, the business value achieved from CC investment enhances organizational performance. Lastly, the CC service model types attenuate the positive effect of IT governance mechanism on business value, and the weakening effect is stronger for software as a service than for platform as a service and for infrastructure as a service. By providing a decision-making guideline to help organizations be successful in CC investment while achieving maximum benefits, the dissertation provides implications for practice.
