Abstract
This dissertation studies language and writing with a specific focus on cultural context and creation. Following the tradition of other rhetoric and composition scholars that blend the personal with theory, such as Lives on the Boundary by Mike Rose and Bootstraps by Victor Villanueva, this dissertation studies the cultural priorities of academic writing by blending creative non-fiction methods along with scholarly critique. Using both Foucault’s theory of discourse communities and James Paul Gee’s discourse community theory that builds off of Foucault’s to focus on social linguistics, the stories held within this dissertation seek to understand issues of cultural controls, adding or changing discourse communities, and the ways we survive along the way. This dissertation also invokes and seeks to embody elements of cultural rhetoric as it combines the cultural priorities of the creative writing discourse community with the academic discourse community. To bring these two discourse communities together, writing methods of analytic autoethnography as well as native autoethnography (as in native to the culture being observed and critiqued). Specific intercultural moments examined are the first-generation college student experience, religious community, family, and rural culture via music and music critique.
