Abstract
In this dissertation, I examine how the incentives for firms to invest in pollution abatement technology and advertising it are affected by differentiated products and environmental regulation. In the first chapter, I study firms' investment decisions about environmental research and development (ER&D) considering product differentiation and emission fees. Two scenarios are examined: non-cooperative ER&D and cooperative ER&D (cartel). In the second chapter, I analyze the impact of environmental regulation on environmental research and development (ER&D) investment and advertising. I examine a Stackelberg game with homogeneous products under two settings: without and with environmental regulation. Considering that the leader has already invested in ER&D but chooses to advertise it, the follower simultaneously decides its investment in ER&D and advertisement.
In the third chapter, I consider the effects of an investment in environmental research and development (ER&D) and advertising on a Stackelberg model with environmental regulation. It examines two settings: (1) no environmental regulation and (2) under environmental regulation. In this setting, the leader chooses to invest in ER&D and advertise it in the first stage, and the follower observes the leader's action, then decides how much to invest and advertise ER&D in the second stage. In the third stage, the regulator chooses emission fees and in the last stage, firms compete in quantities.
