Abstract
Over the last decade, the relationship between Hollywood and China has undergone substantial changes. China has emerged as an essential market for American blockbusters, and the film industries in China and the United States have enjoyed a highly collaborative relationship that peaked in the mid-2010s. At the same time, the Chinese film industry has undergone its own transformation, with Hollywood playing a pivotal role in helping to develop Chinese cinema. As a result, China’s film industry has experienced tremendous growth, with a significant increase in both the quantity and quality of films produced.
However, the Hollywood-China relationship has shifted dramatically in recent years as the United States and China entered into a period of heightened tensions. With the start of the Trump administration, U.S.-China relations began to fray, with a number of trade and political disputes emerging. These tensions have spilled over into the motion picture industry, with the Chinese government repeatedly rejecting Hollywood films, and American studios becoming increasingly cautious about engaging with the Chinese market due to concerns about political and economic risks.
Against this backdrop, this dissertation aims to map out the complex and evolving relationship between Hollywood and China from 2012 to 2022. Drawing on insights from international relations, cultural studies, and media studies, the overarching argument of the dissertation is that the Hollywood-China relationship is multifaceted and dynamic, requiring examination through multiple lenses. By exploring the various dimensions of the relationship over time, this study seeks to elucidate the factors that have shaped its development, as well as the challenges and prospects that lie ahead.
