Study Purpose: The primary goal of this study is to empirically identify common developmental factors that are most likely to influence public workforce development programs targeting high-risk status youths’ successful outcomes, specifically their transition(s) into adulthood and thus the world of work.
Methodology:To systematically review and identify research literature and studies in the area(s) of high-risk status youths’ preparedness and/or readiness to successfully participate in public workforce development programs as indicated by their previous work experience(s) and to identify existing empirically derived research data and findings within this area of research in order to inform the development and implementation of future public workforce development programs. Logistic Regression analysis was carried out using the IBM SPSS Statistics 25 package.
Results:Logistic Regression, using the enter method, was conducted to determine whether the following commonly identified developmental factors can predict past work experience(s) among a group of justice-involved, high-risk status youth: age, grade, family income, school behavior, substance treatment, and delinquency history. Assessment of the regression coefficients demonstrated that of all the included predictor variables, three were found to be statistically significant (p<.05): age, having an annual family income of between $15k - $35K, and being in grade nine was significantly associated with having prior work experience and/or exposure.
Conclusion:Overall, the study analyses demonstrate that common child developmental factors such as family income, age (i.e. level of maturation) and academic achievement (i.e. highest grade completed) are important contributors and indicators of a young person’s transitional status into adulthood, particularly in the adult role of “Worker”.
