WORD AND IMAGE IN EARLY MODERN LITERATURE: A DIGITAL APPROACH TO READING IN CONTEXT

Abstract
As early modern literary scholarship continues to show interest in and uncover links between the verbal and the visual in poetry and drama, there is an increasing need to pair word and image in how we experience these works. We have only recently recognized the vibrant visual culture in England during this period, and the influence of this environment on poets and playwrights is apparent, if not yet fully understood. Many English poems show purposeful engagement with the visual culture of their time, employing techniques like ekphrasis in order to evoke the visual in the textual. Likewise, since the imagination locates its sources for mental imagery in past and present sensory perceptions, Elizabethan and Jacobean visual culture was effectively the most common and consistent stage dressing for public theatre. A web application and reading platform like the Early Modern Visual Reader (EMVR), the initial versions of which I have theorized and built for this project, will benefit a variety of audiences, both scholarly and public, as they explore these works and produce new knowledge about them. By design, the EMVR positions the text in a constant relationship to visual media from the period, prompting connections for future research and providing valuable context in a new kind of digital reading experience.
