Abstract
In its quest to prove itself, the United States had to make sure that its people knew just how much they had achieved over the past few years. Moreover, this knowledge had to be delivered through means other than pure military achievements. With increasing competition in scientific circles, the United States had to find more ways to showcase its prowess. The Space Race was already in full swing, and the nation had to prove to others that it remained ahead of everyone else in terms of scientific advancements. Thus, it began holding different cultural and scientific events to prove its achievements to a wider audience. In the process, the country relied on technological exhibitions that aimed to show off the results achieved thanks to the rapid progress of the times. World's fairs became one of the primary tools used in the task.
In 1962, the City of Seattle became one of the venues hosting such an exhibition in the context of the Cold War. While Seattle could hardly be considered as a typical metropolis, it featured a strong industrial base provided by Boeing Corporation. This factor made Seattle the right place to hold a fair dedicated to technological advancement in the country. In addition, the organizers of the event used this occasion to change the public image of their hometown. They were not alone as other cities also began using various events as an impetus for development. Thus, they organized Exposition 21, a huge exposition focused on the theme of "man in the space age."
Despite being dedicated to science and technological advancements, Exposition 21 also had some implications regarding the economic situation of Seattle at the time and even contributed to the development of the city. At the same time, it also represented the priorities set up by the United States in regard to Cold War issues. It was about showcasing the achievements related to technological and scientific progress in order to create a feeling of a "utopian future." The Seattle World's Fair held in 1962 was a Cold War showcase of scientific and technological advances.
