Abstract
The study of history offers a wealth of information and a plethora of topics, but in many historical considerations, women are left out. This is true of many studies of history, including that of China. Though thoughts of Imperial China perhaps bring to mind foot binding and concubines, the reality is that the history of women in China is as long and complex as China’s history itself. A general interest in women’s roles in history, along with courses on Chinese history, led me to this paper’s consideration—the status of women in the Tang dynasty of China. While the Tang dynasty has been lauded as a golden age, the trend of women’s absence from historical study and evaluation inspired a number of questions: what was life like for women during China’s Tang dynasty? What was their status? These questions are fairly broad, and to attempt to definitively answer them in a single project is certainly a futile effort. Nonetheless, this project aims to add to the general body of knowledge concerning women in Chinese history through the analysis of a number of sources. Sources consulted include scholarly articles focused upon different aspects of women’s lives during the Tang, from family to religion. For additional insight, translated women’s poetry from the Tang was analyzed.
