Abstract
My research explores how the gender of musical composers impacts their musical compositions, and how music reveals cultural values and structures in Western society. I conducted a feminist analysis of three musical compositions for piano, written by LGBTQ+ composers, and presented my research as a one-hour lecture recital on the WSU campus in Fall 2018. Through my research, I found gender identity to overwhelmingly influence composers’ musical works, and that their music exposes cultural themes in Western society such as patriarchal relationships, the self and the “Other,” and binary constructions.
