Abstract
A room temperature liquid ionic compound, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate, has been synthesized and characterized in terms of viscosity and density. The kinematic viscosity, the density, and the absolute viscosity were determined as functions of temperature over the range 30 to 60à °C. At 30.0à °C the absolute viscosity was determined to be 86.4 centiPoise and the density to be 1.20 g/mL. The absolute viscosity as a function of the inverse of absolute temperature was used in order to determined an activation energy for viscous flow of 34 kJ/mol
