Abstract
Cardiac disease is the number one cause of death .among adult Americans. In 1998, 459,841 individuals died of coronary heart disease and 7,300,000 suffered a heart attack. Every 29 seconds an American will suffer a coronary event, and about every minute someone will die from one (American Heart Association, 2001). Many of the risk factors are as simple as being a man over the age of 45 or a woman who has gone through menopause. A family with a history of cardiac disease, diabetes, cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, elevated levels of cholesterol and stress are more likely to suffer from coronary artery disease (CAD) (McGowan & Chopra, 1997). In 1997, the economic cost of coronary artery disease was estimated at almost $10.8 billion \n(American Heart Association) .
