The Occupational Sleep Medicine Group assesses the safety of commercial airline operations with Fatigue Risk Management System (FRMS) studies, which are data-driven systems, based largely on scientific principles and operational knowledge, that allow for continuous monitoring and management of safety risks associated with fatigue-related error using well-defined and validated measures associated with fatigue. Less is known about how other measures (not currently used in FRMS) may play a role in commercial aviation pilots’ fatigue, sleepiness, and cognitive performance at critical phases of flight. A latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify subpopulations of aviation pilots using the variables described below. Data were collected with pre-study questionnaires, sleep/work logbooks, wrist-worn actigraph devices, and a psychomotor vigilance task (PVT). Data collection took place in real time over the course of a pilot’s trip. Variables included self-reported fatigue, sleepiness, and sleep quality, fatigue mitigation strategies, flight information, flying experience, and demographics. Objective sleep was collected with actigraphy, and objective cognitive performance was collected with a 5-minute reaction time task (PVT). This was the first study to use LCA based on pilot data from real-time, long-range and ultra-long range commercial aviation operations, identifying latent subpopulations within these operations. The LCA provided potential target areas for intervention education strategies and new fatigue mitigation data collection approaches, to better inform and improve FRMS in the aviation industry.
