Abstract
Scientific workflow tools have been available for more than a decade. These solutions fall into several classes of workflow tools. Many of the applications are desktop based, centralized graphical user interface systems. There are others that are more distributed workflow systems that can run components across distributed systems. These systems run on open source platforms and proprietary platforms. The components are written in many different languages, and support various different scientific areas. Some of these software systems resemble software from different solutions; business process management or complex event processing, for example. Scientists have many options and it is hard to choose the right one. An important part of scientific workflow, is the current trend in scientific direction from sponsoring agencies. The trend is more centered around data management and access for the use of publications or future research. Agencies like the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the United States Department of Energy's Office of Science are moving toward policies that require data release of all scientific research they contribute to. Furthermore, publishers are also requiring permanent links to the data associated with a publication. The trend toward data release means that research organizations need to consider scientific data management solutions for the data produced by scientists at their institutions. This impacts scientific workflows as they interact and generate data stored in the data management solutions. The current methods for getting data in an automated scientific workflow are primarily file-based and interaction is done through POSIX File I/O. This presents challenges for accessing data from institutions, even those that have data management solutions.
