Abstract
Online education is a growing field. Over the past couple of decades it has expanded exponentially starting with the emergence of distance education. Today, online education encompasses many fields including Completely Online Learning and Blended Learning. However, while the expansion of online learning in higher education and the corporate world is accompanied by a robust field of research, the K-12 environment is not. In order to aggregate the findings of K-12 online education to better inform practice, this meta-analysis reviews 24 studies related to K-12 online education. Analysis of the results indicated a small yet significant finding in favor of blended education as compared to traditional education, a result that was moderated by many contextual and methodological features. When discussing Completely Online Learning, this review found a very small amount of research. As such, policy makers and stakeholders should approach large scale implementation of Completely Online Learning environments with caution. A similar finding was presented when analyzing student affective measures and as such, a call for research is made in both areas.
