Abstract
Student-athletes, especially those with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or Specific Learning Disabilities (LD) in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) division I athletics sports can potentially face stressful environments and schedules, with the presence of unrealistic expectations and pressure from family, friends, coaches, and fans. According to research, interventions and practices used by support services should be aimed at producing engaged, informed, and academically productive student-athletes. Current and historical research has been focused on the educational failures, or financial controversy in regard to the general student-athlete population, with minimal studies focused on the experiences of student-athletes who have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or learning disabilities. The purpose of this qualitative interview research study is to describe, understand and explore the student-athletes perceptions of the effectiveness of the academic support provided for collegiate student-athletes who have been diagnosed with ADHD and/or LD in a rural institution in the Pacific Northwest. Using a thematic analysis, this study explored the enhanced awareness of academic experiences of student-athletes with ADHD and/or LD. The study also explored the effectiveness of the accommodations that are provided at their institution through semistructured interviews. This study focused on the specific field of student-athletes with disabilities in collegiate athletics, in addition to creating intervention models that can be used to develop areas that need improvements in regard to time management for this institution and beyond.
