Abstract
Study Purpose: This systematic review seeks to identify empirically-based and malleable risk and protective factors associated with such student-teacher relational systems that contribute to high-risk status students' developmental and school outcomes. More specifically, the identified risk and protective factors will be utilized for the purpose of developing an evidence-informed teacher training program, in the future. Methodology: The EPPI-Centre Methods for Conducting Systematic Review (2010) guidelines were predominantly used to conduct this systematic review. Results: Based on review of the included studies, five overarching malleable risk factors and three overarching protective factors were consistently identified across the quantitative studies included in this review. Conclusion: This review highlights the unique and critical impact that student-teacher relationships have on students' healthy development and school outcomes. As purported by current school improvement/reform initiatives, targeting student-teacher relationships has the potential to be highly beneficial to students with indicated high-risk status and/or students receiving special education services. In sum, current research v indicates that all U.S. public school students are found to benefit from close, highly supportive, and healthy student-teacher relationships.
