Abstract
The recent attention paid to the complexity of language specific to genres in K-12 education is evident with the implementation of the Common Core State Standards—standards heavily laden with student production of language expectations. As stated by the CCSSI (2010) the structure of the standards allows teachers room to maneuver and implement their own strategies to reach the language goals set. Because English language learners are forced to navigate both the rigorous language expectations as well as mastery of the content, these standards are problematic. This microethnographic study centers on the academic language used by teachers and students within the context of one diverse 4th grade social studies classroom. The data was collected through participant observation using audio- and video-tape to capture classroom interaction, allowing for later transcription. A unique systematic use of academic language that evolved from teacher talk to student production emerged through the analysis of the data.
