Abstract
Individuals with emotional/behavioral disorders can demonstrate a wide range of
inappropriate behaviors, including internalized and externalized behaviors. This intensive
review of the literature was focused on examining the characteristics of students with
emotional/behavioral disorders, the academic and social/behavioral challenges these students
face, as well as effective interventions designed to decrease the inappropriate and increase the
appropriate behaviors of such students. In addition, insights into current research regarding the
knowledge and skills of preservice teachers related to working with students with
emotional/behavioral disorders were examined. Implications for application of the research
findings as well as recommendations for future research are provided.
