Abstract
The following research project engaged students who are facing systemic barriers in education in a participatory action research project. Students involved in this project participated in a Youth Policy Recommendation Board that facilitated a process of conscientization directly related to their personal experiences in the education system. Through an analysis of shifting intergovernmental relationships and state and federal education policy, students discovered gaps in current education policy that made success in the system more difficult for youth facing systemic barriers. Students then worked to determine specific policy recommendations that they felt would increase student success in the system.
