Abstract
Researchers have come to an agreement that socio-economic class background of students is the best predictor for student's future level of educational attainment and socioeconomic class. From the field of anthropology, two main theorizes have pioneered the way to understand this relationship between education and socio-economic class: cultural reproduction and cultural production. This thesis utilizes and builds on this research to understand the relationship of socio-economic class in the city of Miami, Florida. I argue that though previous studies and theories have been effective in describing and predicting aspects of the relationship between socio-economic class and education, the effect of local culture has been overlooked. This thesis argues that local culture has the capacity to dynamically shape and the relationship of class and education. In the case of Miami, the economic and cultural conditions have created a particular cultural environment. This local cultural environment has shaped parent's and student's predispositions, attitudes and approach to education. This thesis focuses on Miami university students and their educational experiences and choices. In doing so, it reveals and accounts how students and parents from Miami do not resemble students and parents from previous studies by contextualizing them in the local culture of Miami.
