Abstract
This paper focuses on improving the aesthetics of anaerobically digested (AD) manure from dairy farms, and introduces environmental sustainability to the standard technical and economic analysis for decision making when implementing this technology. It addresses concerns from the public regarding the dark brown color and odor emanating from aerial irrigation of this AD effluent, as well as economic and environmental impacts of the proposed technologies implemented to mitigate these issues. This research has shown contacting the AD effluent with ozone can remove the bile odor as quickly as 5 minutes and reduce color up to 90%, as well as remove up to 40% of the chemical oxygen demand (COD). Due to the high dissolved carbon content, very little oxidized to completion within the contact times of this study. The order of magnitude cost analysis suggests a $0.009/gal cost to treat effluent for a 20-year project life at 10% discount rate for a 300000 gal/day treatment capacity. Relative to 2008 U.S emissions, the life cycle assessment indicates greatest environmental impact from the ammonia stripper process followed by dissolved air flotation, then ozonation.. Cradle-togate impacts has greatest impact on smog potential, followed by aerial acidification potential, then global warming, while the operation has greatest impact towards global warming potential.
