Abstract
In this work we present a simulation based methodology to understand the communication requirements for a power grid having Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) in all substations at the high voltage level. We used actual power system models to estimate the amount of data that would be generated at each substation and then estimated the two important parameters of a communication network namely bandwidth and latency. The communication network for a power grid that we assumed here is a meshed topology same as the power grid and we assumed that there would be optical fibers as the communication media.
