Abstract
The concept of contentment in athletics is usually associated with mental health. Recently, university athletic departments have committed resources to developing mental health programs for athletes. However, mental health is only one facet of contentment. Additional factors which can potentially influence contentment levels include educational attainment, working conditions, and physical health. Herzberg's two-factor theory of motivation is used in this study to explore whether contentment (as a "motivating" factor) significantly differs between student-athletes and collegiate students who are not varsity athletes. Student-athletes and nonathletes are important university stakeholders, so it is in the interests of both sport managers and university administrators to understand both groups thoroughly. Higher contentment is positively correlated with motivation, which can lead to improved academic performance in both groups and improved athletic performance among athletes. The Contentment with Life Assessment Scale (CLAS) was used to measure contentment levels for each defined group. Although the athletes' average contentment levels were slightly higher than non-athletes, the differences between non-athletes and athletes were not statistically significant.
