Abstract
As an artist I am interested in how my art works are perceived and received. Perception has to do with awareness, achieved through one's senses. I am interested in someone having a heightened level of awareness when interacting with my work. One way to achieve this is to create circumstances which allow someone to have more than just visual contact with the work. I want to give someone space to have a physical relationship with the work in addition to a having a formal visual connection to it. Reception has to do with receiving something from someone, as in a gift. Gifting is the act of bestowing, presenting, or giving something. It is often done in order to honor an occasion, show favor toward someone, or to make a gesture. Gifting most often has a physical aspect to it as well. It engages senses other than sight. Touch, smell, hearing, and taste are often activated by receiving and taking possession of a gift. So as an artist, what circumstances can I create that heighten the perception or sensory awareness of my work? What actions can I take that imbue the reception of my work? This thesis explores these questions through the lens of social practice in the making of art.
