Abstract
Data focusing on international development shows up to 60% of developing world infrastructure projects implemented within the past two decades as no longer operable (WHO, 2008). While humanitarian engineers have good intentions, oftentimes community needs and capacity are not assessed during the early stages of a project, and project steps are not community driven. Incorporation of educational theory in the technical project approach is a way to help create project success. This paper describes how to incorporate participatory methods in humanitarian engineering projects while using a sanitation project in El Salvador as a working example. Blends of technical, cultural and participatory assessments were used to provide information for problem scope, engineering design and preferred sanitation facilities.
