Abstract
This essay charts the conceptual framework behind the Master of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition, Deconstructed. Comprised of performative, sculptural, and video elements, the body of work explores notions of personal and collective memory, and psychological and material cycles. Three symbolic objects (a hot water bottle, a dictionary, and a dinner plate) are physically acted upon through a documented performance. The breakdown (and eventual reuse) of material exposes the nature of the relationship between the owner, the object, and what the object represents. Citing personal narrative and critical discourse, this essay provides context for the poetic and metaphorical implications of its visual counterpart.
