Abstract
This study examined determinants of physical activity for older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias to learn more about how to promote physical activity for older adults with AD. A self-efficacy theory framework was used to examine theoretical and other known correlates of physical activity for older adults. Caregivers of older adults with AD and other dementias (N = 99) completed a survey. Caregivers provided information related to care recipient's health status and physical activity as well as their own socio-demographic characteristics, and their thoughts and feelings about AD care recipient's physical activity. Among characteristics of older adults with AD, gender of AD was a significant predictor ([Beta] = .80, p < .05), men with AD participated in more physical activity than women with AD. Other factors such as age, education, health conditions, prior experiences in physical activity, and physician's advice that have demonstrated significant impacts on physical activity for general older adults did not associate with physical activity among older adults with AD. Also, none of caregiver's socio-demographic characteristics had a significant association on AD care recipient's physical activity. This study demonstrated the importance of caregiver's feelings and thoughts about physical activity participation among those with AD. In particular, caregivers' outcome expectation for AD care recipient's physical activity strongly predicted the physical activity participation of those with AD ([Beta] = .82, p < .05). In addition, caregivers' outcome expectation for care recipient's physical activity partially mediated the relationship between caregivers' self-efficacy for care recipient's physical activity and levels of care recipient's physical activity. The results suggest that educating caregivers about benefits of physical activity for older adults with AD and providing caregivers with support could contribute to increased physical activity participation for older adults with AD.
