Abstract
This thesis is an emerging theory on the future of intelligent interior design. A framework of three technology domains has been established, Smart Geometry, Ambient Intelligence, and Information Modeling. Each of these domains produces specific design outcomes which may be used by interior design academics and practitioners. The framework is based on a sliding scale which allows the designer to determine the best practices of cybertechnologies for various intelligent interior design iterations. Section two of the thesis is a discussion of the impact of technology on design thinking and the advancement of the design profession. The historical account begins with an examination of the distribution of knowledge which occurred with the invention of the printing press, ending with the impact of cognitive distribution through cyber-technologies related to the Internet of Things, and Zero User Interfaces. Section three examines the technological domains of Smart Geometry, Ambient Intelligence, and Information Modeling and defines the design outcomes of each domain. The paper concludes with the following assumptions; due to cyber-technologies design thinking of the 21st-century will be radically altered from that of 20th-century design thinking. Interior designers will no longer design the void of the space; they will create interiorized experiences within the built environment. Instead of designing for building typology designers will distribute an experience. This new paradigm will transform health facilities to the experience of well-being, educational institutions to edutainment, and communication will change the perception of presence by altering time, distance and scale within the intelligent interior.
