Abstract
Medication compliance is one of the major factors that influence morbidity and mortality in asthmatic patients. Medication administration is often monitored by parents/guardians and school personnel in children under 12 years old. The adolescent child presents a particular challenge as they are more independent and medication administration is less likely to be as closely monitored by other individuals. This study is an attempt to gain a better understanding of medication compliance in adolescents with asthma that require daily maintenance medications and identify factors that are associated with compliance and non-compliance. The results of this study may be used to guide further research in developing health care provider approaches that may be used to increase compliance with daily therapy and therefore reduce morbidity and mortality in adolescent asthmatics.
